KINETIC ENERGY – TIMELINES

An overview of our initiatives, projects and creative activities, with the names and functions of the participating artists, collaborators and associates. We have divided the arc of our productive years from 1975 until 2016 into three distinct periods: The Warehouse Years (1975-1984), The Edge Years (1985-2002), The St Luke’s Years (2004-2016). From 2017 onwards there have been two major projects: archiving, and Kinetic Energy Press.

Artistic director/dancer/choreographer Graham Jones founded Kinetic Energy Dance Company in 1975, one of the first contemporary dance companies in NSW. In their earliest years, KE rehearsed and performed at The Seymour Centre, Redfern. From there, Jones and his Company moved on to establish a Warehouse Studio in Sydney, the first of its kind. In 1984, actor/director Jepke Goudsmit joined the Company. Jones & Goudsmit have worked together as co-directors and co-creators ever since, renaming the group Kinetic Energy Theatre Company. In 1991 KE incorporated under that name. Graham & Jepke founded THE EDGE Theatre Lab in 1985, their home base for creation, training and performance, and initiated many projects in support of contemporary performance arts. In 2004 they relocated to St Luke’s Hall, Enmore. In October 2016 they closed operations and focussed on archiving and publishing their work.

THE WAREHOUSE YEARS

This list includes performances, courses and creative initiatives from 1975 until 1977 at The Seymour Centre, and during their eight years at the Warehouse Studio in Liverpool Street in Sydney’s CBD from 1978 until 1985. The list does not include rehearsal, teaching & research schedules, except for occasional indications when a new project or course is started. Data from the earliest years unfortunately are only sketchy.
