Exciting news: after a two-year break from teaching and performing, I am ready to reanimate Kinetic Energy’s theatre activities at St Luke’s in 2019 with a new workshop project.
I am calling it OASIZ, a name suggesting revitalisation and nourishment. A homecoming, gathering, and respite. And a preparation for challenges and new ventures.
What is driving me is a desire to nurture creation and performance, to pass on knowledge, and to enjoy the delights of artistic exploration together.
Also the urgency of our times, the need for solidarity and community. In our mad, difficult, chaotic and often overwhelming world, live-theatre-making plays an important part: to help us truly connect, reflect, and reset our compass. To share our quests.
I will delve deep into my reservoir of knowledge and experience, gained during my multi-facetted work in Kinetic Energy Theatre Company (together with co-director Graham Jones, for over thirty years), and prior to that, through my work as core member (for eight years) of the international Research Theatre Group KISS, and before that my extensive studies at Grotowski’s Theatre Laboratory in Poland. This artistic trajectory has provided me with a legacy too precious not to make available to performance makers and explorers of this time.
The workshops will be structured around particular themes, skills and perspectives, and are designed to be a journey of deep listening, using the personal instrument of the performer (i.e. body, voice, breath, mind, imagination) as the gateway to the authentic creative self.
Some keywords to describe the nature of the journey: focus, transformation, surrender, dissent. The work will be unadorned, inquisitive, acoustic, raw, sophisticated, inter-disciplinary, playful, inter-cultural, spirited, mindful, intimate, eccentric.
OASIZ aims to be a meeting place for performers and creative folk of all disciplines. For those who feel the need to explore, inquire and learn together. A place to kindle the flame and spirit of intimate, living theatre.
Apart from being a joint learning process, it could also become a platform for performance.
We would develop short pieces based on what I teach, as well as on material brought in by participants, which I will help shape. When ready we pin down a night for showing.
Each OASIZ workshop will consist of 5 Friday night classes in a row. Participants can commit to all five classes and pay a little less, or drop in per class and pay a little more. I am keeping prices down as low as possible, knowing most of us have little financial elbowroom. The first workshop is in March:
SUMMER OASIZ - March 1, 8, 15, 22, 29.
Venue: St Luke’s Hall, 11 Stanmore Road in Enmore.
Time: 7pm – 10 pm. Wear comfortable clothing. Perhaps bring a yoga mat.
Cost: $100 for all 5 classes, $25 per drop-in class.
The maximum number of participants per class is 14. So it is important to book! Please email me to reserve your class/classes and arrange a paying method (cash on the night or by electronic transfer).
Looking forward to your response,
Jepke Goudsmit (co-director of Kinetic Energy Theatre Company)
